Jerry Jones, the flamboyant owner of the Dallas Cowboys,is considered to be one of the richest people in America. His team hasn’t won a Super Bowl in nearly 23 years and yet, they are considered to be America’s Team. Jones made the team be a brand rather than a football team. So, you must be wondering how much is he worth and how did he become a multibillionaire. One thing is for sure, his life story is filled with big ambitions and even bigger bets.
Jones’s Life Before the Cowboys
Born in Los Angeles, California in 1942 and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Jones was a child of small supermarket chain owners. He studied at the University of Arkansas and played right guard on the offensive life for the legendary Razorbacks team. On the team, which won the National Championship, he played with the future Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson.
After finishing college, Jones worked under his father who was the chairman of Modern Security Life Insurance Company and was earning millions. He tried to buy the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League, but his father dissuaded him. As a result, he started working in oil which became a massively profitable venture for the next twenty years. Jones Oil and Land Lease helped Jonas make about $175 million when he sold it to Arkla, Inc.
Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys
After selling his company in 1989, Jonas decided to buy the Dallas Cowboys which were an irrelevant team at that time. He bought them for $140 million and fired the head coach, Tom Landry. Instead, he hired Jimmy Johnson as the new head coach. The team won their first Super Bowl championshipin the 1992-93 season and repeated the success the next year. As a result, they became known as America’s Team.
Even though the Cowboys won two consecutive Super Bowls, Jimmy Johnson resigned and Barry Switzer became the new head coach. The Cowboys won their third and last Super Bowl by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barry Switzer resigned just after two years and the team continued to struggle for the past couple of decades.
In 2009, Jones bought a new stadium which he named the Cowboys Stadium. After four years, he sold it to AT&T for naming rights. The stadium is now known as the AT&T Stadium.
